Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

It has been awhile since I updated this section but I knew now is the time because of all the exciting things the DCB has coming up in the next few months.

Our Christmas concert season just concluded with great success. The band performed at several venues and brought Christmas cheer to everyone who listened. In particular, our featured performance of the Christmas season, at Christ the King's beautiful new sanctuary, was a smash triumph.

The upcoming concert cycle will feature some new music and wonderful performances. Once again, we will be performing at the Motor City Festival of Bands in Dearborn with several other community bands from the area. This concert is a wonderful celebration of Wind Band music.

We also have our annual spring concert which, this year, will feature music to fit our theme: The Elements. The band will play a program of tunes to evoke images of Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire. My favorite piece we are preparing is a contemporary composition called 'Cloudburst' by Eric Whitacre. Originally a choir tune, 'Cloudburst' depicts a thunderstorm slowly rolling towards the listener complete with 'rain' sounds and thunder strikes!

Check the concert schedule tab on the left for specific details for all of our performances.

The band and myself are looking forward to seeing everyone who comes out to listen.

Season's Greetings!

The holiday season is getting more festive with everyday and the same can be said about the DCB. We are currently hard at work preparing our winter and Christmas programs. We have a busy month in December so be sure to check our concert schedule page for all of the dates.

Several of the selections we are preparing are very exciting and challenging. One that the group is having fun with right now is a medley of tunes from the movie “The Polar Express”. This festive medley has sounds ranging from magical to old Hollywood. Also featured this holiday season will be a dramatic musical setting of “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. Not only will the band perform that number but a narrator will tell the story to captivate the crowd.

Don't just get your holiday music from the radio, internet or phone; see and hear the magic live and in person. Hopefully we will see you and your family at a concert this December!

I would like to welcome everyone to the Downriver Community Band website and my first entry of the Conductor's Corner. From time to time I will post updates, insights, or random thoughts on anything relating to the DCB.

My first year conducting this fine ensemble has passed. I can truly say that I thoroughly enjoyed my time so far. The group is always in good spirits, works hard, and performs majestically. It is great working with so many people that are passionate about music. I'm looking forward to any musical adventures in the future!

Since our 'Interstellar' Spring Concert we have been in 'Summer Mode'. This means most of our musical selections have been of the classic band or patriotic variety. Some exceptional compositions have been performed such as Gustav Holst's Second Suit in F and John Philip Sousa's Gallant Seventh. As we wind down this portion of our season we have one more concert to feature these wonderful selections.

On November 9th, the DCB will be performing for the 3rd Annual Veteran's Party in Pinckney. This concert is always a thrill. We are honored to perform for those who have given so much to ensure our freedom. New to the program, for us, will be Aaron Copland's Variations on a Shaker Melody which features the popular tune Simple Gifts.
